James Andrew
Of Mice and Men
John Steinbeck
historical fiction
just right
just finished

1. The ending of the book Of Mice and Men was very surprising. Even though Steinbeck used a lot of foreshadowing telling us that something bad is going to happen between Lennie and Curleys wife. But what surprised me the most is that George actually killed Lennie. George took Lennie under his wing. He kept him out of trouble, got him a job, and kept him from getting hurt.  Lennie's disability made him not very smart. George kept him from getting arrested in Weed, got him a job at the ranch, and was his best friend throughout the story. I think it was fine that George killed Lennie. It was very selfless, all George wanted was for Lennie not to suffer in prison. Know, Lennie does not have to suffer. Also George will have an easier time getting jobs and he will be able to live the life that he wanted to live with Lennie but without Lennie.

2. I really enjoyed this book. I thought that the author did a very good job of using foreshadowing. I noticed it in a few circumstances and it left me thinking about what will happen. I always had questions going through my brain as I was reading. I didn't really like how Curley was so stuck up. He was mean to Lennie and he payed for it when Lennie broke his hand. Also, I didn't like how Curley's wife got into everyones business, Curley is not a good husband and she has to stay at the house all the time. I think she should just leave because she isn't happy and Curley is mean. Those are my feelings about this book.

3. The biggest theme I found in this book is loneliness. Loneliness kept popping up in this book. One example of loneliness is when Crooks is forced to stay far away from the house in a barn. But, back then there was so much racism that, that was really common back then it was expected. But Crooks was really lonely. Another example of loneliness is Candy. After his dog got sick and they had to put him down, Candy doesn't really have a friend. Also, because of his age he cant go out when the guys do. The last example of loneliness is Lennie. His disability makes him not have many friends and people think he is dumb or they are afraid of him. His only good friend is George, but he keeps Lennie from interacting with other people because he might get in trouble. That is the biggest theme I found in this book.

4. My favorite character by far is George. George is so nice to everybody he sees. He helps Lennie for the whole story, even if he would be better out by himself. George could have a good job, a house and maybe even a family without Lennie. But, he has to look out for him because they have been friends forever and he promised Lennie's Aunt Clare. George got Lennie a job and got him out of trouble in Weed. He also is kind to everyone and helps people when they need it. George looks out for everyone and is like a father to Lennie.

5. My least favorite character by far is Curley. I don't like Curley for many reasons. The first reason I don't like Curley is because he picks on people for absolutely no reason. He just went up to Lennie and started hitting and punching him. The only reason he doesn't like big guys is because he is tiny and he probably wants to be tall like the others. He is also very arrogant. He thinks he is so cool because he is the only person on the ranch ranch with a wife. So he goes around showing off his wife and beating on big guys for no reason. Lennie did do the right thing by crushing his hand because Curley had no reason to hit him.

6. I did not expect the ending of the book to be at all what it was. I thought that George and Lennie were going to get a nice house and Lennie would care for the rabbits like he was saying throughout the whole book. But when Lennie killed Curleys wife I knew that they wouldn't be able to get the house and the rabbits. But I never expected George to kill Lennie. When he did I had many questions going through my head. Like why did George do it, or will George stay at the ranch, or leave and be successful without having to look after Lennie. After I thought about it for a while I came to the conclusion that it was probably the better thing to do. He didn't want Lennie to get shot by Curley, but he also did not want him to rot in prison or get tortured. Those are my thoughts about the ending of the book.

  1. I felt like the book was well written and really kept the reader interested in the book. I think you did a really good job of summing up the end of t he book. Something that I agree with you is that Curley's wife shouldn't have been getting into other peoples business. She was just trying to get people in trouble. Something that I disagree with is how Curley is a good husband. Curley's wife said in the book how he is mean to her, but overall you didi a good job with the post.
